Educreations - Lesson Ideas
The thing I love about this app is how it can be used an an authentic assessment tool. Student thinking can be recorded, shared and assessed at a later time. Here are some of the ways my colleagues and I have used this app so far.
Maths
Each week my students produce a short educreations video that explains the outcome we are currently covering in class. We watch a sample each day and give feedback to the producer. This results in improved videos each day as students look to improve on the videos from the day before. It also allows me to get 'inside the heads' of my students and see what strategies they are employing and helps me plan where they need to go next.
We upload our videos onto a wikipage, so that students can refer back to their lessons at any time. You can check out all their videos at www.tjpsmaths.wikispaces.com

Oral descriptions
- While conducting Technology lessons with Stage 1 students, we used the Abby Monster app first to create a monster. We then imported this image into Educreations and the students recorded an oral description of their monster.
- The following lesson, the students drew their own monster using a drawing app and then imported the monster into Educreations and recorded an oral description.
- Kindergarten students enjoyed creating a name poster using Drawing Box and then recorded a short sentence about what they liked most about school. This was recorded in the first few weeks at school and uploaded on the school wikipage to share with parents.
Oral Reading
- A simple way of recording oral reading of own texts is to take a photo of the text the student has written and then have them read back their writing. You can instantly see the difference between what they wanted to write and what they actually wrote.
- Another option is to photograph a running record text and then record the student as they read the text. Gives you a tangible piece of evidence to back up your running record sheet.
PD/Health
- One of our Stage 1 teachers used Educreations to record student recounts of an injury an animal had and the explanation as to how they got that injury (not following a school safety rule).
HSIE
- Students worked in small groups to research a historical landmark in Newcastle. Each group put together a short educational video highlighting important dates and information which was to be shared with all the other students in the class. Each video was then able to be embedded in a wiki so students could revisit the information whenever needed.
